IN THE AUTUMN OF 1972, DIRECTOR MICHAEL WINNER OF DEATH WISH FAME CREATED “THE MECHANIC” STARRING CHARLES BRONSON. IN THIS CASE, IT DIDN’T MEAN CAR MECHANIC. IT MEANT A SPECIAL HIGH RANKING OF HITMEN WHO WERE EXPERTS AT COVERING THEIR TRACKS BY DISGUISING THE MURDERS-FOR-HIRE AS ACCIDENTS, SUICIDES, AND UNRELATED MURDERS SUPPOSEDLY COMMITTED BY PETTY STREET THUGS. IN THE WINTER OF 2011, SIMON WEST (LARA CROFT TOMB RAIDER, WHEN A STRANGER CALLS [RMK]) REMADE IT AND PASSED THE ROLE OF ARTHUR BISHOP TO JASON STATHAM. A HALF DECADE LATER COMES THE SEQUEL NONE OF US WERE WAITING FOR, WITH THE MOST DONE-TO-DEATH SUBTITLE IN CINEMA HISTORY, RESURRECTION.
THIS ROLE HAS MOST FILMGOERS SAYING FOR SURE THAT STATHAM HAS BEEN TYPECAST. THIS TIME, SEVERAL WOMEN WORKING UNDER THE EMPLOY OF ONE RIAH CRAIN MAKE BISHOP FALL FOR ONE OF THEM, BUT IT’S OBVIOUSLY A TRAP. CRAIN THREATENS TO ATTACK DOZENS OF CHILDREN IN A SOUTHEAST ASIAN SHELTER, KIDNAPS BISHOP, AND FORCES HIM TO ACCEPT A MISSION TO CARRY OUT HIS NEXT THREE CONTRACTS. HE INFILTRATES A PRISON IN MALAYSIA, INDIAN OCEAN, TO WHACK A WARLORD. HE GOES TO SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, TO SLAY A SEX SLAVE TRAFFICKING KINGPIN WHO SPECIALIZES IN YOUNG CHILDREN. HIS LAST TARGET IS AN ARMS TRAFFICKER IN BULGARIA, EASTERN EUROPE, BUT INSTEAD OF CARRYING THIS ONE OUT, BISHOP AND THE ARMS DEALER JOIN FORCES TO FIGHT CRAIN BEFORE CRAIN CAN KILL BISHOP. THE CLIMAX TAKES PLACE ON A BOAT RIGGED WITH DETONATIVE CHARGES.
FOR THE SECOND TIME THIS MONTH SINCE “NINE LIVES”, A TOUGH EMBARGO ON CRITICAL REVIEWS LASTED UNTIL AROUND THE HOUR IT RELEASED. IT TOOK A LITTLE LONGER, BUT THE APPROVAL RATING IS DOWN TO THE LOW 20s (D MINUS). MOST OF YOU WOULD KNOW BETTER THAN I WHAT RAZZIES TO NOMINATE MECHANIC: RESURRECTION FOR, SO CUT THE BRAKES BELOW!
Fernando Marambio (2/7): "[Jason Statham]'s movies put to good use this former model's gymnastic skills and they can even be delightful, if you like watching fights with choreography. The thing is that, after an entertaining debut, the sequels are undermined a little. Not because of Statham's serviceable performance, but because the stories start to become a little silly, specially in this follow-up to the adventures of ARTHUR BISHOP. [...] Adding a pro like Tommy Lee Jones isn't enough for the movie to soar. Old Tommy's character is barely decorative."
I just saw it. For your consideration:
-Worst Supporting Actor for Sam Hazeldine (also for THE HUNTSMAN).
-Worst Prequel or Sequel.
-Worst Remake or Rip-Off (rip-off of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE PART 4 (the building-climbing scene) and KILLER ELITE).
Oh, and maybe Worst Supporting Actor for Tommy Lee Jones. But not:
-Worst Actor for Jason Statham.
-Worst Actress for Jessica Alba.
-Worst Supporting Actress for Michelle Yeoh.
